“Hot Cross Buns, Hot Cross Buns”… you know the song. It’s the time of year for the traditional Good Friday staple to be gracing the Bakehouse ovens. Made of sweet, tender dough that is dotted with citron (candied fruits), and iced with a cross, Hot Cross Buns have become a long-time tradition for the Easter season.
English folklore includes many superstitions surrounding hot cross buns. One says that buns baked and served on Good Friday will not spoil or become moldy during the subsequent year. Since Bakehouse doesn’t use artificial preservatives of any kind on our baked goods, we’d recommend you take that one with a grain of salt. Another story encourages keeping a Hot Cross Bun around for medicinal purposes, as a piece of it given to someone who is ill is said to help them recover. We can’t guarantee that one either, but they are delicious, so a bite or two certainly may “cure what ails ya.”
Sharing a hot cross bun with another is supposed to ensure friendship throughout the coming year. That’s a superstition we can get behind wholeheartedly. In that spirit, we say to you: “Half for you and half for me, Between us two shall goodwill be.”
Hot Cross Buns are available in packages of 6 throughout the month of April at the Bakehouse.
